I'm sure this subject has been referred to elsewhere, but I can't find it! Things are getting serious at Gipsy Patch Lane this year, with the replacement of the old arched bridge for the Cribbs Patchway MetroBus Extension

There's video, apparently produced using Roblox, which shows how they're going to do it. I'm loving the use of the 'Farewell to the HST (High Speed Train)' set to illustrate passing traffic...

And I'm loving the packing box, with faces labelled 'Top, Left, Front'.

These are going to be long works. Effectively until the end of 2021 it seems, for road users.

You learn something every day. lots of things, but some are lightbulb moments.

"Gipsy Patch Lane" I read ... and thought "nah - it's Gypsy Patch Lane".  But, hey, I were wrong and (of course) Red Squirrel is right.

Both spellings are good for general use.  See Diversity Style Guide. Having assigned "Gip" to the lane, it leaves "Gyp" as an even more special name in or family.

Sorry about the thread hijack

No pain, no gain. At least when it's done, drivers will be able to get to the traffic lights for the A38 more quickly than at present. And it sounds as if Cribbs Causeway could be connected to Bristol Parkway by 2022 if MetroBust can find an operator.

The closure of Gipsy Patch Lane is not just to motor vehicles - it's to cyclists and pedestrians too - at least for some of the  time.

During the closure of Gipsy Patch Lane, Network Rail will operate a shuttle bus for pedestrians needing access either side of the bridge. The shuttle bus will start operation on Thursday 5 March 2020 and will run weekdays, weekends and will also be available overnight. This service will be free of charge and will operate for the duration of time the railway bridge is closed to pedestrians

Station Road (on which Patchway Station is) will be closed to vehicles at the GP Lane end, but pedestrians and cyclists will still be able to access the road from GP Lane.

The new bridge is scheduled to be put in place between 11 -19 April 2020 when the railway line will also be closed.

"The closure of GPL (Ground Position Light) is going to cause dreadful problems here as it is used as one of the a main route from the A38 to get to and from many local areas and beyond and including Bristol Parkway Station" writs Sylvia Popham, who will be well known to members who go on Wessex Wanderer Railway Walks

Some photos showing progress, taken during today's exercise (21 Mar 2021):

Looking east along Gipsy Patch Lane, with the bridge behind the viewer, showing stumps of trees felled for the new MetroBus route. The road is to be widened by up to 9m. The trees were similar to those on the other side otf the road, which will be retained

Looking west. The ground is now being dug out, and water is already pooling under the bridge. Sumps and pumps will be installed to deal with this. Pedestrians and cyclists can now pass under the bridge using this temporary path.

Looking east. It's a lot bigger than the old one!

that was rather the point, wasn't it?

And I note upthread that we should now start calling this road "Ground Position Light".

Gipsy Patch Lane reopens westbound

Gipsy Patch Lane is to reopen to traffic in a westbound direction only (towards the A38) as work on the Cribbs Patchway metrobus extension (CPME) progresses.

The one-way system, which will open from 6am on Monday 6 September, will make it easier to travel through the Stoke Gifford area and allow work on the CPME project to continue safely and efficiently.

The westbound one-way system will operate along Gipsy Patch Lane between the Little Stoke Lane junction and the mini roundabout at Rolls Royce. Traffic will only be able to travel westbound between those points, towards Filton and the A38.

The existing signposted diversion route will remain in place for eastbound traffic via the A38, Bradley Stoke Way and Winterbourne Road.

During the one-way system a number of local roads also need to be closed at their junction with Gipsy Patch Lane.

The westbound one-way system and road closures will be in place until road widening works have been completed in late 2022.
