OTD - 16th February (1907) - Weekend Return Tickets and other complexities

And we thought ticket complexities were something that has come about in recent years ..

On Saturday, February 16th [1907], the Midland Railway commenced to issue Saturday to Monday tickets between all their stations (with a few exceptions) instead of limiting these tickets to the seaside and inland pleasure resorts.

The rate is a single fare-and-a-quarter for the double journey with a minimum of 4s. first-class and 2s. 6d. third-class. There is no restriction in respect to the trains by which the holders of the tickets may travel, and the luggage arrangements are the same as in the case of ordinary passengers.

This arrangement differs somewhat from the week-end ticket arrangements of the Great Northern and Great Eastern Railways, but closely resembles the system that has been in vogue on the North-Eastern Railway for some considerable time, except that, on the North-Eastern Railway the tickets are issued at a single fare for the double journey, and can be obtained from Friday up to mid-day on Sundays, and are available for return on the Sunday (train service permitting), or on Monday or Tuesday.

Does anyone know when BR^▸ -era weekend returns were withdrawn? Think it was a little while before the railways were privatised.

They's back, of course - long weekend returns ... (here) for example. £69 return Paddington to Chippenham, using peak trains on Friday and Monday if you wish versus £195 on an anytime return.

Thanks for this. They need to be available between any two end points above a certain distance, yes? Also, not shut people out of returning Sunday, but already very useful for a return to work Monday am. Its encouraging to see the railway providing something for people who work daytime hours because this is something they've become less good at.

Also, ooh err... what's one of these? "GWR^▸ Corp Ret Ist" Paddington - Bath Spa £1000...

They continued within Network SouthEast after privatisation as 5-day returns (rather than month validity)
