ID cards for season tickets

One of our guests is headed up to Chippenham every day next week - best price rail ticket being a weekly season. A long time since I bought a season ticket - does he still need an ID card? I recall I got mine man years ago over the counter at a manned station ticket office. What does our guest do on Monday morning? Does he need to make an extra trip to a manned station during published ticket office hours (and hope they have not had to close due to being short staffed) or can the train manager issue ID cards when a person joins at an unstaffed station and want his first season?

A pain, but yes, photocards are still required for any type of season.

The obvious solution to this would be to by a single on first day of travel (if your destination has a ticket office at least), and to allow the cost paid to be used as a credit towards the cost of the season when bought on arrival.

I somehow doubt tgis is yet possible, so they’ll need to source the photocard from a staffed station prior to purchase. I believe weeklies are available from TVMs^▸ but you need to input the photocard number.

Less useful now for your guest but my understanding is you can do it "online" and have it all delivered to you by post taking around 5 days - providing your ticket is covered by the GWR^▸ touch scheme which most (if not all?) are.

or if they have a smartcard (with a photo on it) from another operator then this could be used as a photocard I believe.
