It has amazed me that the most powerful locomotives of my youth - the class 55 Deltic - seems to have (or have had) a long and useful retirement history in running specials and even freight trains in may part of the UK (United Kingdom).    Came to my mind again today when "On this day" flagged up the arrival - admittedly a model - at the Swanley New Barn Railway (https://steamdriver.wixsite.com/snbr/about-us)

Fond memories of journeys north from Kings Cross hauled by a Deltic!

I'm just a bit too young to have experienced Class 55 haulage on a scheduled train.

I've only once experienced a Deltic. Severn Valley Railway a few years ago. Even limited to 25mph it was still a thrill to ride behind 55019 Royal Highland Fusilier.

Way back in 1970, I spent a week in Lincoln as a guest of a trainspotter I'd met in Exeter the year before. One day - the highlight of the week for the 13 year old me - we went to York via Retford. Our train from Retford to York was hauled by D9003 'Meld'. To say I was excited would be an understatement!

Seen here later in the day returning from Newcastle to Kings Cross.

Roaring along with 1S87 the 1210 Ramsgate to Glasgow Central we find D9000 (55022) 'Royal Scots Grey' making a fine sight near to Didcot.
