Thank you, grahame, for those images.  My appreciation to the Great Western Railway Paddington Band.

I have posted this item from youtube before, but I will now do so again - simply because I'm still not entirely convinced it's not what grahame does, on his very occasional days off from the railways.  Anyone who has met grahame will note the distinctive element of his frontage.

Please enjoy: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=VxXdrsvEtnU  Chris from Nailsea, via Cornwall.

I am probably being very naive, but can somebody with a knowledge of railway earthworks tell me exactly what is different between the Salisbury to Exeter line and any other railway earthworks in the country? Surely other lines in the country would be suffering?  The cynic in me suggests deeper reasons for SWR not wanting to run a full service on The Mule!

........  Catering is proportionate to journey time.

So, on that basis, you are travelling up to The Smoke from Penzance..... What would you expect?

I can remember the days when Waterloo/Exeter trains had a proper buffet, and before that even a restaurant.
Then came new shorter trains, and catering was improved to a trolley, sometimes.
Catering was then further improved to nothing.

You also got faster and more frequent services, and a higher proportion of people making regional rather than long distance journeys and that to some extent gives paid to catering and sleeper services - but perhaps those reductions have gone to far.

I note that on a Kings Cross service headed for Edinburgh yesterday, I was served light lunch (before I got off at York) and on a Glasgow to Euston serices I was served a ploughman's high tea after I joined the train at Preston.  These are longer journeys.  On the Paddington to Weston-super-mare service I got a piece of flapjack and a Coffee.  On the Amsterdam to St Pancras service, I got a light breakfast.  Catering is proportionate to journey time.

The 12 hours, 800 kms train from Ostersud to Gullivare was a whole different experience. Other longish distance trains in Sweden include a snack and coffee station which is looked after by the train manager, ticket checker, caterer and cleaner rolled into one.

.......  Be careful you don't encourage HMG to start splitting all trains at Salisbury - whereas in fact it might make sense for them to go on to Barnstaple and Plymouth via Tavistock.

The cynic in me suggests the ultimate aim is for a core Waterloo to Salisbury service, with a few extended to Yeovil Junction - leaving GWR (or its GBR(W) equivalent) to operate Exeter to Axminster, with a bus service serving Crewkerne. The track between Yeovil Junction and Axminster would remain in situ for Network Rail services and possible GBR(W) diversions when necessary

You are more cynical than I am - however what I seen read about is about offering a reliable service at reduced cost, and it doesn't go on to say "at current frequency", nor "at current service hours" nor "across the current network".   If anyone has seen those re-assuring words, please point them out to me.    There will always be times that services and networks need to be adjusted to meet changing needs, but without general re-assurances I would be concerned.    I note that there is concern over the future of the Cambrian Coast line in Tywyn

Those steps at Bishop Road take you to the correct side of the canal and the back entrance to Paddington Station via the Met/Circle gateline. Was on my daily walking route to the station when based at Paddington on the site of the old goods depot.

There are steps on both sides of the canal, but those on the right side are quite small (and there's no lift) and right by the cab road entrance, so perhaps could be missed if you are already focused on crossing the cab road.

Ah yes - so close to the cab road I was probably too concerned to avoid that having apparently passed over the canal without access, not realising the steps kicked back.  Next time ...

Ah, those steps, with lift, to the other side of the canal did not exist in my day - pre mid-2020. It was a building site.

Quoting a friend who's up in reading for the day from his timeline:

Just found out that all trains to Melksham later have been cancelled so fuck you very much GWR and your useless incompetence!

No idea how we’ll get home now!

A cancellation of the first train this morning because of the person hit by train on the neighbouring line was understandable.   But if the empty / feeder was coming in that way, it could simply have gone to Swindon and picked up the diagram from there.  Yes, I know others will tell me that the robustness capacity has been taken out of the system and that wasn't possible because [insert reason given here].

Arrived at Swindon 23 minutes late, but the return working left on time at 11:05.

On a Saturday there were two trains from Westbury to Swindon - 08:00 and 08:40 I think. "For robustness" GWR cut the second one - we've one train less in the Saturday timetable now - but the robustness has not been delivered and at times I feel we were cheated.

Robustness - not bustness then?

Alterations to services between Westbury and Swindon via Melksham

Due to a shortage of train crew between Westbury and Swindon disruption is expected until the end of the day.

Train services between Westbury and Swindon via Melksham may be suspended. Melksham will not be served.

Customer Advice
As the result of a shortage of train crew we are unable to operate the Westbury - Swindon - Westbury via Melksham train service in either direction for the remainder of the day. Road transport will operate in place of the trains but will not be running to the same schedule as the train they replace.

Ah, Stagecoach serves the ferry too and *do* go to and from the boat, the boarding point being 'Beyond the gates' - the road as far as the ferry terminal is public, so, it's suggested that it's an issue concerning fees and charges. It will not be the only place where friction, for foot passengers, is built into transport interchanges.

.........largely, it would seem, to be about a reluctance amongst the bruvvers to scan electronic tickets

Obviously that's not RMT's way of seeing things - even if that 3p-per-scan is the most specific claim:
The RMT Union’s AGM has considered the matter and acknowledged the severity of this situation.  It is clear that there is now a breakdown in industrial relations, which includes the following serious issues:

Undermining of safety-critical roles: Despite previous agreements, the company is actively trying to reverse the requirement for two Train Managers on double sets, threatening both safety and jobs.
Breach of staffing agreements: Cross Country has failed to recruit the agreed number of Train Managers and intends to reverse an agreement allowing them to have the ability to go back and utilise catering staff to cover essential Guard duties. These actions also highlight the company's intentions for the future of catering on the network. The RMT cannot allow catering staff to be utilised in this manner. The company should enter into dialogue with the RMT to ensure that we have a catering service that is robust, delivers for passengers, and protects the employment of staff. It is unacceptable for Cross Country to simply remove jobs without any form of consultation with this union. Yet this is exactly what the company has done, with no attempt made to resolve the issue. This attack on the catering provision only deepens the fears of members that this approach to job cuts could cascade into multiple disciplines, putting wider job security at risk. We cannot accept this blatant attack on jobs and the ‘redundancy by stealth’ method. This practice must cease immediately, and urgent discussions must take place with the RMT on how to improve catering services across the network.
Misuse of management grades: Management staff not authorised under agreed arrangements are regularly performing Guard duties, undermining agreements and frontline staff.
Excessive payments to managers: Managers are reportedly receiving up to £250 per train on top of their salaries, another breach of an agreement, while also refusing to negotiate fair overtime and rest day enhancements for frontline grades.
Failure to provide Rest Day Working proposals: Cross Country has failed to table proposals for Rest Day and Weekend Working enhancements for all grades, breaching commitments made during previous dispute resolution.
Pay inequality: The company continues to pay different rates to staff doing the same job and has refused to honour its promise to resolve this issue.
Failure to implement agreed ticket scanning payments: An agreed 3p-per-scan payment has not been implemented, and the company are refusing to pay the agreed amount without justification, which only shows the company’s lack of respect for agreed outcomes.
Victimisation of RMT representatives: Union reps have been targeted and undermined simply for carrying out their legitimate duties on behalf of members.

Ember, already connecting several destinations, have recently launched a four-times-a day service between Scrabster and Inverness (with the first of the day being at 03:47, which with a half hour change at Inverness, feeds into the 07:55 LNER service to Kings Cross).

A recent account of this service from Bluesky, positive about the on-board experience, and indicates that their service arrived into Inverness with the battery cheerfully ¾ full. (On the less positive side, off the boat from Stromness, which arrived late 'cos weather conditions, if I have it right, they had a hasty five minute walk from the ferry to the ferry terminal to pick up the bus - the boat having long ago moved from its previous pier at the ferry terminal and while I think buses called at the new location for some time, they seem to have moved back to the terminal building - but clarification is needed on that.)

Looking forward (and knowing him quite well), I can say that grahame always has a 'Plan B' - and usually a 'Plan C' as well.

B is OK thus far

Yesterday - Almere to Melksham, changes at Amsterdam Centraal, St Pancras (walk to Kings Cross), York, Leeds, Preston, Euston (bus to near Paddington), Chippenham and Swindon. Sample Dutch Railways, Eurostar, LNER, TPE, Northern, Avanti, Transport for London and GWR.  I use the "inbound" day of my Interrail pass, provided to give residents of a country a get-you-home ride from however you arrive in the country to your final destination station, and it lets you give a "via".

I had entered on the planner Almere to Melksham via Haltwhistle, and it was happy with that as a single trip.  Chaos at Kings Cross and we left 55 minutes late, meaning the the connection and Newcastle was going to fail, so I bailed at York and took the opportunity to try out the service from Leeds that runs via Burnely Manchester Road to Preston and Blackpool.  In my youth that was a sparse serice - daily, I think, but it has stepped up now to hourly and my goodness was it busy. Overbusy in fact - full and standing. 3 car train where five's needed - may sound a bit familiar to one of our regional services around here that does not serve London.  Lots off offs and ons but lots of through passengers.

Experienced catering offerings from Eurostar (breakfast), LNER (Lunch), TPE (Coffee), Avanti (Light tea) and GWR (evening snack) - pass was 1st class.  I cannot really think of this as "free" food - rather it was included the price of the ticket for which I paid, 820 Euros, and a supplement (sorry - "reservation fee") of 40 Euros for Eurostar against there offer ('sorry - sold out for that type of reservations') on later trains of 239 Euros.

The 18 goes from Euston station, and the stop at Bishops Bridge Road / Little Venice is close to the back entrance (footbridge) at Paddington.

Thank you for that - I took it last night and it worked very well for me from Euston - 8 minutes from arrival on a Pendelino to leaving on a bus - all the way to Bishops Bridge Road.

Some navigation is required to cross the canal, and I don't suppose it's advertised for that stop (St. Mary's might be).

Yes - it arrives at Paddington's back end. I did NOT go down the steps to the wrong side of the canal (in hindsight that might have been wise to then cross at a footbridge) and the only other way off Bishops Bridge Road that I saw on that side was the cab rank slope - no pedestrians and I wouldn't want to risk it so I walked over the station and along Eastbourne Terrace (round the station).   More to explore next time; the fact that the bus stop has "Little Venice" in its title hints to me of canal access.

Yes, it could.   That's a service which in the early days of our service improvements, GWR were going to run about half at hour later (on weekdays anyway). We asked them, and they agreed and implemented , the earlier time.  It cuts that gap from what was the 07:50 to about 10:30 (Melksham times) at the very time people want(ed) a first off peak train.

On a Saturday there were two trains from Westbury to Swindon - 08:00 and 08:40 I think. "For robustness" GWR cut the second one - we've one train less in the Saturday timetable now - but the robustness has not been delivered and at times I feel we were cheated.

Sundays are said to be a problem - but this is a Saturday.

On some routes especially it would seem that "Saturday is the new Sunday" when it comes to crew shortage.

09:52 Westbury to Swindon due 10:36
09:52 Westbury to Swindon due 10:36 will be starting late from Westbury.
This is due to train crew being delayed.

27 minutes late off Westbury, so first train on the day left Westbury at 10:19.
