| AQ - Sometimes there are no trains ... 7.12.2025 Posted by grahame at 08:05, 7th December 2025 | ![]() ![]() ![]() |

I've travelled across Europe - from Melksham to Svolvaer - mostly by train, but in some places trains have not been available and I've taken to other forms of transport. This will - I suspect be a hard set of "where is this" questions and exceptionally I'm going to invite members to identify as may as they can straight away. You folks often impress me - I suspect I may find a some answers coming up quiet fast, but some will "stick"

4 Santorini. It's a very long climb up the stepped path from the quay to the town. On a darker note, I have read of concerns for the welfare of the donkeys.

Yes, and I have read those concerns too. I don't know enough from seeing them on one day, but I did wonder about waiting around in the sun and heat and then climbing with some of those not-insignificant people on my back. There is now a more modern way to climb too

Yes - the train service from Leer to Groningen is suspended. On 3 December 2015, the bridge over the Ems was destroyed by a ship colliding with it. Due back after 5 years, then in 2024, most recent estimate was this year. It's the only international rail link between Germany and the Netherlands to the north of the main line east from Amsterdam via Osnabroek

Actually no - in fact I had to scroll back to the questions, and to look up Fiesch, to help me put your answer in context. Having done so, I can see why you might think ...
The quiz (now from yesterday) was a particularly tricky one - I'll leave it open for another day or two, but then come in with the answers to those not yet solved. By the way - if I "like" an answer, it's correct ... I will also be coming back and filling all of those correct answers in on the original a bit later.

15. Narvik. I already knew the bus was a Svipper route 100 Narvik to Tromsø, and I was sure I'd looked at the obvious place, which is Narvik. But apparently not!

Yes - though I caught - I think it was the 400 - to Svolvaer. A really bleak bus station with services headed off to some fabulous places.

Sometimes I get the impression life's trying to confuse me into submission. And now Graham's joined in!
I found Fiesch as the site of picture 14 but I was told that wasn't right. I was surprised, as it was a very good ID - so wherever the right location was must be more like Fiesch than Fiesch is. Then, after the whole quiz had been declared "difficult" but only twelve of the answers listed, on two more occasions the last couple of answers m didn't appear.
Now we are told that it was Fiesch after all! So I'm not sure what to believe is correct, whether something else in my first answer was seen as in error, what was confused in the past, or what is still not what it seems.

Oh dear - so sorry for the confusion I have caused on that one ... I can appreciate your [rant] -> [/rant]. With the exception of just one or two members - including yourself - picture identification outside Great Britain tend to be slow, and in the mixed quizzes it's the GB ones that go first, which is why I see the continental ones as difficult.
I am looking back in self analysis and working out why I may have said "no" to Fiesch. Something in the back of my mind suggested to me that you were suggesting a place in Germany / Austria which it was not and based on the back of my mind, I answered in the negative. Sorry about that; we all make mistakes and that was one of mine - I suppose I rush (and rushed) through "lighter side" stuff with just 'checking lighter'.
