I guess the GWR masterplan of shove everyone to the Elizabeth Line and forget about them wasn’t so full proof after all.
............there is some lengthy advice about rail replacement and alternatives if you're at either end of the line but didn't want to fill the space up here!!!
We have space on the server, and for completeness I will quote it.
Due to a broken down train between Swindon and Westbury fewer trains are able to run.
Looks right "no spare train" in the Cardiff -> Portsmouth is running with only 3 and 2 car trains. Love it that you can take "next 2 services" - that reads to me that you can use today's ticket on the first train or two tomorrow.
GWR DMUs are failing all over the place today
The train being used for the Par to Newquay service has broken down, and a spare is not currently available.
-The train that runs between Exeter St Davids and Okehampton has broken down.
One of the train being used on the Exeter to Barstaple service has developed a fault and has been taken out of service. There is no spare immediately available, and so regretfully we have had to reduce to service from hourly to two hourly. This is likely to be for the remainder of the day.
The train operating between Swindon and Westbury via Melksham has failed and there is no spare train available to replace it
Clearly a serious DMU crisis, units breaking down, no serviceable spares, are they simply be worked unrealistically hard, beyond point where they can repair them fast enough

Apart from being mortified that I've not joined, I wonder if the WWRUG has a category of membership for the likes of organisations. A 'Corporate' class of membership as it were..
Mark
Mark
I don't believe we have such a class - we are a USER group - but we would love to have you as a member, Mark. On the other way round, WWRUG *is* a member of organisations which have corporate memberships.

There are now no through trains inbound to Stratford-on-Avon from Marylebone.
Heading for London, a train departs Stratford on Avon at 21:33 (that sounds too early for people leaving a performance). It reaches Marylebone at four minutes to midnight, so, around two and a half hours - it calls at most stations on the way. Today, it's a 2 carriage 165.

“The other thing is the lack of options to travel around the UK, because of things like rail networks which are fragmented, the lack of [rail] passes – the lack of a kind of curation of tourists is a big issue.”
“We end up with tourism concentrated in places like London and Edinburgh, but the rest of the economy doesn’t get the benefit of it."
“We end up with tourism concentrated in places like London and Edinburgh, but the rest of the economy doesn’t get the benefit of it."
Yep - I agree with him. There are pockets of good ... and huge numbers of tourists will always make for the "Honey Pots" of York, and Stratford-on-Avon. I am involved in a number of tourist groups on social media - most of them for people already with a rail bias - but questions like "is 25 minutes enough to change from New Street to Moor Street long enough, and how do I reserve a seat from Moor Street" - example posted yesterday - indicate some of the issues. You can guess, I suspect, the total day's journey that was posted ... those honey pots.
This is not a UK / unique problem, though; hard to quantify the data but you see some of the same across Europe.
What happened to the Marylebone - Stratford upon Avon direct trains? A service that obviously would be very useful for tourist visitors

Town fighting to restore direct trains to London
People have urged transport bosses to reinstate train services between a west Wiltshire town and London.
Passengers had previously been able to travel from Bradford-on-Avon to London Waterloo until the route, which went via Salisbury, was axed in 2021.
A consultation has now been launched by South Western Railway (SWR) to ask people what they would like to see changed about current services; a development which has heartened campaigners.
"It is encouraging," Sam Blackwell, mayor of Bradford-on-Avon, told Radio Wiltshire. "They are taking ideas and trying to understand what changes passengers want from the timetable."

School trip as a kid. Visited again a few years ago - via the public footpath. Too expensive for an 'official' visit.
Ambivalent. But would like to get my drone up there. Although that would be limited to the south of the stones as they are bisected by a No Fly Zone.

I went with my family back in the 1970s when you could walk around it more freely. Certainly agree that Avebury has more to offer...and I do remember the HTV series set there. Special mention too for the lesser known but not unimpressive stone circles at Stanton Drew in Somerset, which I think are the third largest in the country after Avebury and Stonehenge.

The current hot weather, is seriously impacting frozen and chilled food storage in super markets, and home delivery of same.
For some time, many chilled and frozen foods were "unavailable due to store modernisation" which is code for freezers and chillers broken. Then when back in stock I ordered some for delivery, only to find all chilled and frozen items, left off the order I presume that the fridge unit on the van expired en-route.
Now most chilled and frozen foods are unavailable due to "ongoing store modernisation" which is code for it broke again.
And on a related note, the central air conditioning where I used to work, failed completely. They should not have made me redundant !

Same story in my local large supermarket, although they were very honest with the reason saying the fridges couldn't cope with the hot weather. Also a smaller shop local to me was closed yesterday with the fridges empty when I peered through the window. The chocolate was also absent from the shelves indicating it might have been a store wide air-con failure and not just the fridges.
And to top it off, my Costa had run out of ice so I couldn't get a nice refreshing frappe!
